Northern Light Take-a-part
Greenland Paddles
We
now stock the new three-piece Greenland and Aleut-inspired carbon fiber
paddles from Northern Light Paddlesports. These carbon fiber paddles
are beautiful, light, and strong, and they feel great in the hand and
water. Made
of a semi-tight weave of carbon fiber reinforced with Kevlar,
these
lightweight paddles
are the ideal
strength
to
weight
ratio
to
withstand the rigors of travel and paddling under expedition conditions.
The satin finish shows off the weave of the material, but isn't overly
glossy or slick to grip. The modular three-piece system allows us to
size paddles to various lengths according to the unique loom width for
each paddler. When taken apart, the longest piece is 36 inches so the
paddles will fit easily in your luggage or a Feathercraft backpack.
Greenland Paddle
The
Greenland three-piece paddle is an efficient touring paddle, with enough
volume at the edges and ends to be
advantageous
for rolling. The blades are 3.45 inches (8.77 cm.) wide at the tip, with distinct
but comfortable shoulders at the blade root. The three-piece system
allows us to give you two paddles for the price of one: with every Greenland
paddle, we ship a short loom connector so that you have the option to
assemble the paddle as a "Storm" paddle with a 6.5-inch (16.5
cm.) loom. Weight: 31 - 33 oz. (879 - 936 gr.)
Greenland take-a-part $375
Aleutian Paddle
The
Northern Light design for the
three-piece Aleutian-inspired paddle is unique. One side of the blade
has a slight ridge; the other side is slightly concave. The ridged side gives superb control and
stability, while the slightly curved side has some of the performance
characteristics we
associate with wing paddles resulting in noticeably increased
performance for speed and distance. The traditional Aleutian paddle is about four inches
longer than a Greenland paddle. The blades are about the same length, so this
distance is reflected mostly in the loom.
The Aleutian paddles are normally fitted with a 24.5-inch (62-cm.)
loom
resulting in a 90-inch (228-cm.) paddle. The wider loom takes into
account the different technique for holding the Aleutian-style paddle.
Instead of holding the Aleutian paddle with one's fingers curving over
the blades as in the Greenland-style paddles, the paddler places his or
her hands within the loom, with no fingers curving over the blades. Weight: 33 oz. (936 gr.)
Aleutian take-a-part $375
Loom dimensions
Loom dimensions are 1.47" x 1.17" with a soft
rectangular profile. These dimensions provide a perfect fit for your
hands.
Sizing
Sizing a Greenland or Aleutian paddle is all about the
width of the loom (distance between the paddle blades); the optimal
width depends on the beam of your kayak, your height, and the distance
between the blades where you normally hold your paddle. Greenland-style
paddles are traditionally held with three fingers curving over the
blades and one's thumb and index finger gripping the loom at the blade
root. Please call or
e-mail for information about proper sizing.
