Aqua-Bound Paddles

Ray Series

Aqua-Bound's Ray Series take-apart paddles combine carbon fiber shafts and blades made of injection molded abX resins reinforced with fiberglass or carbon fiber for superior strength and stiffness. The four-piece option allows these paddles to fit easily into your gear. These high-performance paddles offer an unbeatable weight-to-toughness ratio at a great price. The detachable blades and split shafts of the four-piece paddles take apart easily to fit inside your kayak or a Feathercraft backpack. There are three different blade styles: the Eagle Ray, Sting Ray, and Manta Ray.

The Eagle Ray (6.25" X 20") is a full size touring paddle that is very smooth through the water. It is ideal for a low-angle paddling style and is a great all around paddle for kayak touring. (Shown in Carbon abX) Eagle Ray
The Sting Ray (6.25" X 18") is an all-purpose recreational and light touring paddle. It pushes a bit less water which allows a quicker paddling cadence and reduces fatigue. Also available with a smaller shaft for paddlers with smaller hands (If you wear size small gloves, you may prefer the small shaft). Sting Ray
The Manta Ray (7.25" X 18") is an aggressive high-angle touring paddle designed for acceleration and power. This is the right choice for paddling through surf or maneuvering through rock gardens. (Shown in Carbon abX)
Fiberglass abX Ray Series

All Ray series take-apart paddles with white fiberglass-reinforced abX resin blades and carbon shafts are available in either two or four-piece models in 210, 220, 230, and 240-cm. lengths.

Fiberglass abX Eagle Ray (33.0 oz. for 220 cm.)    2-piece $129; 4-piece $139

Fiberglass abX Sting Ray (31.5 oz. for 220 cm.)     2-piece $129; 4-piece $139

Fiberglass abX Manta Ray (33.5 oz. for 220 cm.)   2-piece $129; 4-piece $139

Carbon abX Ray Series

For even better performance, all Aqua-Bound Ray series paddles are available with dark gray carbon-reinforced abX resin blades and carbon twill shafts. These paddles are a bit more durable, a little stiffer, and lighter weight than Aqua-Bound Ray series paddles with fiberglass-reinforced blades.

Carbon abX Eagle Ray (30.8 oz. for 220 cm.)    2-piece $179; 4-piece $199

Carbon abX Sting Ray (29.3 oz. for 220 cm.)     2-piece $179; 4-piece $199

Carbon abX Manta Ray (31.0 oz. for 220 cm.)   2-piece $179; 4-piece $199

Northern Light Take-a-part Greenland Paddles

We now carry the new three-piece Greenland and Aleut-inspired carbon fiber paddles from Northern Light Paddlesports. These carbon fiber paddles are beautiful, light, and strong, and they feel great in the hand and water. Made of a semi-tight weave of carbon fiber reinforced with Kevlar, these lightweight paddles are the ideal strength to weight ratio to withstand the rigors of travel and paddling under expedition conditions. The satin finish shows off the weave of the material, but isn't overly glossy or slick to grip. The modular three-piece system allows us to size paddles to various lengths according to the unique loom width for each paddler. When taken apart, the longest piece is 36 inches so the paddles will fit easily in your luggage or a Feathercraft backpack.

Greenland Paddle

The Greenland three-piece paddle is an efficient touring paddle, with enough volume at the edges and ends to be advantageous for rolling. The blades are 3.45 inches (8.77 cm.) wide at the tip, with distinct but comfortable shoulders at the blade root. The three-piece system allows us to give you two paddles for the price of one: with every Greenland paddle, we ship a short loom connector so that you have the option to assemble the paddle as a "Storm" paddle with a 6.5-inch (16.5 cm.) loom. Weight: 31 - 33 oz. (879 - 936 gr.)

Greenland take-a-part   $375

Aleutian Paddle

The Northern Light design for the three-piece Aleutian-inspired paddle is unique. One side of the blade has a slight ridge; the other side is slightly concave. The ridged side gives superb control and stability, while the slightly curved side has some of the performance characteristics we associate with wing paddles resulting in noticeably increased performance for speed and distance. The traditional Aleutian paddle is about four inches longer than a Greenland paddle. The blades are about the same length, so this distance is reflected mostly in the loom. The Aleutian paddles are normally fitted with a 24.5-inch (62-cm.) loom resulting in a 90-inch (228-cm.) paddle. The wider loom takes into account the different technique for holding the Aleutian-style paddle. Instead of holding the Aleutian paddle with one's fingers curving over the blades as in the Greenland-style paddles, the paddler places his or her hands within the loom, with no fingers curving over the blades. Weight: 33 oz. (936 gr.)

Aleutian take-a-part  $375

Loom dimensions

Loom dimensions are 1.47" x 1.17" with a soft rectangular profile.

Sizing

Sizing a Greenland or Aleutian paddle is all about the width of the loom (distance between the paddle blades); the optimal width depends on the beam of your kayak, your height, and the distance between the blades where you normally hold your paddle. Greenland-style paddles are traditionally held with three fingers curving over the blades and one's thumb and index finger gripping the loom at the blade root. Please call or e-mail for information about proper sizing.

Loom Width Paddle Length

Bear-resistant food storage canister

Bear-resistant food cache

These bear-resistant containers are expert tested (by bears) and have proven effective in keeping even the hungriest bears out of your food supply.

The Model 812 Backpackers' Cache by Garcia Machine is 8.8" in diameter by 12" long, and it weighs 2.7 pounds. This durable ABS plastic container is designed to slip easily into a kayak or backpack - each canister holds 4 to 5 person-days of food.

Since 1982, Garcia Machine has worked with wildlife specialists to develop light-weight containers that backcountry campers can count on to keep their food safe from bears and other wild animals. Documented studies have shown that the use of these containers has drastically reduced the seriousness and frequency of camper/bear incidents. In many backcountry areas, hanging food has proven ineffective, as the bears have learned how to retrieve food hanging from tree limbs. The Model 812 Backpackers' Cache will keep your food and the bears safe.
