Alpacka Fjord Explorer
Rowboat & Heavy Cargo Boat
The Fjord Explorer is the "heavy lifter"
of the Alpacka fleet. It can be rowed or paddled, and is built extra-long and
with added flotation to carry a passenger or heavy cargo (but be warned
that it's a little cozy!). The Explorer includes breakdown oars, an oarframe, a
removable skeg, and an elevated rowing seat. The Explorer is a
multi-configuration boat loaded with features.
As a Rowboat:
The Explorer features an aluminum oarframe weighing
only 20 oz. that breaks down for packability. The raft comes with
special oars that weigh 16 oz. each and can be joined to form a
feathered kayak paddle, or shortened and used like canoe
paddles. The oars break down into multiple pieces
and can be stowed inside a backpack. The Explorer is easy to row; it is
the fastest Alpacka raft, with a hull speed of approximately 2.5 knots.
As a Traditional Raft:
Stripped of oars and oarframe, the
Explorer becomes our largest traditional raft. The conversion process
takes only a few minutes. The oars can be reconfigured into a kayak
paddle, and the oarframe, skeg, and extra seat all removed. The result
is a raft with greater internal volume and flotation than any of our
other boats. We recommend this configuration for very large rafters or
those who want to carry massive cargo, such as moose quarters, multiple
large backpacks, or large loads of scientific equipment. For those
running more technical rivers in the Explorer as a raft, we recommend
a standard whitewater paddle, such as the Aqua-Bound Splat or Manta Ray
four-piece paddle.
As a Two-Person Boat: The Explorer is
designed so that it can be used on flatwater by two
people, for water crossings and other tame applications.
The removable elevated seat can be detached from the
installed seat and used by the second occupant as a
seat-pad. This way, the Explorer can carry two people
plus hiking gear in flat and calm water. Space is tight,
so it's not necessarily comfortable for extended
periods. Please note that the Explorer is not
designed or intended to run whitewater in this
configuration.
Skeg: The Explorer comes with a
VelcroŽ-attachable skeg to improve tracking on lakes and
open water. The skeg is not intended for shallow water &
rapids, of course.
Elevated Seat: The Explorer also
comes with a detachable, elevated rowing seat. This seat
can be used as intended, left at home to save weight
when you're going light, or used as a seat-pad in the
bottom of the boat by a second person when using the
Explorer canoe-style with two paddlers. The elevated
seat also provides an improved platform for fishermen to
cast from.
Specifications & Performance: The
Fjord Explorer weighs approximately 5 lbs. 8 oz. without
the oarframe, oars, skeg, or rowing seat. The inside
length of the boat is 2 inches longer than a Llama. In
addition, the entire boat is 1 inch wider and does not
taper towards the bow, creating a much large internal
boat area. The bow and stern shape are identical, and
build extra-large to provide greater flotation.

The Explorer is a great choice
for anyone who needs a faster
boat for flat water or large
cargo capacity. It makes an
excellent tender for sailboats
and powerboats, and is also
useful for fishermen and hunters
who prefer to row rather than
paddle across lakes, or who need
to pack out game.
The Fjord Explorer is built
to the same rigorous standards
as other Alpacka Rafts. However,
the rowing frame and oars are
not designed for heavy duty
whitewater; we suggest changing
to the paddle mode for Class III
and higher whitewater. The total
package weight of this raft is
10 lbs. 4 oz. including oars,
frame, skeg, and seat. |
