Choosing a Raft Size
Alpacka rafts come in four sizes: small
(Alpaca), medium (Yukon Yak), large (Denali Llama), and extra-large (Fjord
Explorer).
How Sizing Works:
The length and bulk of your lower body determines
proper fit in an Alpacka raft. Although the sizes below work for most
people, you may want to move up a size if you have very long legs. The
Fjord Explorer accommodates all sizes of rowers, or can used as a paddling
raft for very tall boaters or those carrying large amounts of cargo.

General Sizing Tips
Larger
boats have greater cargo capacity, but all our boats offer plenty of
flotation for almost anyone who can fit them, plus as much gear as most
people carry. For ninety percent of boaters, the best raft is a snug-fitting boat in
which your feet touch the front of the boat with your legs fully extended.
The length and bulk of your lower body, not
your actual height, is what determines proper fit in an Alpacka raft. Most
people who are shorter than 5'8" will probably be most satisfied with an
Alpaca. Most paddlers between 5'8" and 6' will probably be happiest with a
Yukon Yak. The Denali
Llama is best for those with a long inseam or who want the
option of putting two people in a boat. The
Fjord Explorer,
or rowboat, provides
maximum space and flotation for heavy loads or very tall boaters.
For Very Large Boaters:
If you're very large (over 250 lbs.) consider
a Fjord Explorer, even if your height is shorter than what's suggested. The
Explorer has larger tubes, providing much more flotation than the other
boats. In rowing arrangement, the Explorer accommodates any height
comfortably.
For Whitewater & Technical
Boating: Whitewater paddlers will find a
snug fit essential. Proper fit enhances boat handling significantly. It
provides long-term comfort, a dynamic frame (your body), and a responsive
boat.
For Bulky Cargo:
If you're planning on carrying bulky (not just heavy) cargo on
less technical water, consider a slightly oversized boat. Our boats hold a
great deal of weight. In most cases, your limiting factor is not weight
capacity but physical space.
For Light & Fast Travel:
Smaller boats weigh less, pack down smaller,
and inflate faster. Especially for light travelers, a small boat will
provide all the flotation you should ever need. The Alpaca, our smallest and
lightest boat, is maximized for races like the Eco-Challenge and the Alaska
Mountain Wilderness Classic.
Please contact us if you're
confused about the right boat to get. We're
happy to assist you in choosing the right boat for your particular
application, whether it's floating rivers with your dog and kids or crossing
continents. The last thing we want is for you to buy a boat you're unhappy
with.
